The death toll from Typhoon Kalmaegi in the Philippines climbed to 66 on Wednesday as residents of hardest-hit Cebu province began picking through homes and businesses devastated by the worst flooding in recent memory.

Typhoon Kalmaegi was forecast to slam into shore Monday night or early Tuesday. It was last spotted about 95 kilometers (59 miles) southeast of Guiuan town in Eastern Samar province, with sustained winds of up to 140 kilometers (87 miles) per hour and gusts of up to 170 kph (106 mph).

Typhoon Kalmaegi intensified as it made landfall in the central Philippines on Tuesday, with the state weather bureau warning of "life-threatening" conditions as it placed large parts of the Visayas region under the second-highest storm warning.

More than 150,000 people have been evacuated across the eastern provinces of the Philippines as Typhoon Kalmaegi, locally named Tino, approaches from the Pacific. Authorities have issued warnings for torrential rains, potentially destructive winds, and storm surges reaching up to three metres (nearly 10 feet).

Typhoon Kalmaegi is forecast to rapidly strengthen as it heads toward Vietnam's central coast, with winds potentially reaching up to 166 kph when it enters the East Sea on Wednesday, according to the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting.
