Federal workers are bearing the brunt of the government shutdown, with more than 1 million of them going unpaid while Democrats and Republicans in Congress argue over funding federal agencies for the current fiscal year.

The 2025 government shutdown is rapidly approaching the second longest in history with no end in sight and with mounting fallout for workers, travel, and emergency response.

“As Alabama DHR noted, SNAP benefits are 100% federally funded, and therefore, U.S. Food and Nutrition Services controls the issuance of these benefits on EBT cards,” Gina Maiola, Ivey’s communications director, said Monday.
